Deliberative processes

Public health decision-making is complex. On the one hand, there are often uncertainties regarding the effectiveness of specific projects, programs or policies to address public health issues. On the other hand, there is often no consensus within the population, or even between experts and decision-makers, on the best actions to take.

In recent years, the use of deliberative processes in the context of public decision-making has been the object of growing interest. Deliberative processes can stimulate a dialogue between all relevant actors in order to critically examine an issue, and to come to a rationally-motivated agreement.

The Centre has taken an interest in deliberative processes as promising way to bring a diverse set of actors as well as evidence to the table, with more informed and context-rich decision-making as the result. As such, we are developing a set of resources relating to deliberative processes in order to add them to the set of strategies and tools available to public health actors.
